When writing feels more like a chore than a creative outlet, I know it’s time to shake things up a bit. One particularly fun way to do this? Flash fiction challenges!

These fun, time-boxed exercises give you a break from your routine and let you explore new ideas in under 500 words (sometimes a lot under). They’re perfect for shaking off writer’s block, sparking creativity, and rediscovering the joy of storytelling.

Who knows, you might even end up with something you can submit to a contest.

The Writers’ Den is a reader-supported newsletter. Subscribe free for daily writing tips and upgrade for deeper insights and practical resources to grow your writing skills and career.

Here are three quick flash fiction challenges to get started:

  1. The One-Sentence Story
Write a complete story in one sentence. This forces you to focus on clarity and impact.

Example: “She opened the mysterious envelope, smiled at its contents, and set it aflame before anyone could see.”

  1. Reverse the Ending
Take a familiar story (fairy tale, movie, or book) and rewrite the ending in 500 words or less.

Example Prompt: What if Cinderella didn’t marry the prince but opened a shoe-making business instead?

  1. Dialogue-Only Scene
Write a scene using only dialogue—no actions, descriptions, or inner monologue.

Prompt: Two strangers meet at a train station just before one of them leaves forever.

Pick one of the challenges, set a timer for 10 minutes, and let your imagination flow.

Flash fiction is more than a fun challenge—it’s a way to experiment with ideas, play with structure, and develop skills that translate into longer, more polished work. Full subscribers, keep going and let’s explore two areas where you can push your creativity even further.
