The 100-Word Challenge: Mastering Brevity in Storytelling
Can you tell a powerful story in just 100 words? Let’s find out.
A great story doesn’t need pages of buildup or flowery descriptions; sometimes, 100 words are enough.
Writing within a tight word limit forces you to focus on what truly matters: strong characters, clear stakes, and a satisfying resolution. It’s an excellent exercise in self-editing and precision, making every word work harder.
Here’s the challenge: Write a complete story in exactly 100 words.
How to Craft a Powerful 100-Word Story
Start with a punch. Jump into the action—there’s no room for slow setups.
Imply more than you explain. Let the reader fill in the gaps.
End with impact. A twist, an emotional punch, or a lingering question keeps it memorable.
Example:
The church door groaned as he pushed it open. The last time he stood here, his mother was in the front pew, weeping as he emptied the collection box.
Father Luis looked up. “You came back.”
“I shouldn’t be here.”
A siren wailed outside. He flinched. Habit.
The priest nodded toward the confessional. “Stay or go. Your choice.”
His fists unclenched. His pockets were empty now. No stolen wallets, no pills. Just shaking hands and a hunger he couldn't name.
The screen slid open.
“Bless me, Father, for I have sinned,” he whispered.
Go ahead, try it for yourself!
