Friday Fun Challenge: Writing with All Five Senses
Get out of your head and into the world. Write something that bursts with sound, colour, texture, and life.
One of my favourite things about Mexico is how alive everything feels. There’s no such thing as silence here. Music drifts from doorways, blending with the rhythmic chatter of friends in the street. Colours don’t just decorate; they demand attention, from the deep reds of dried chiles in the market to the electric pinks and blues splashed across sun-warmed walls. Every corner vibrates with energy; every moment hums with life.
We don’t just go out to eat food; it’s to be experienced. The smoky scent of sizzling meat curls through the air before you even see the taco stand. A sip of spiced chocolate lingers on your tongue, rich and complex. Flavours aren’t subtle; they’re bold, layered, unapologetic. Every bite tells a story.
Good writing should feel like that. It should crackle with sensation, pulling the reader in—not just with plot, but with presence. They should taste the salt in the ocean spray, hear the distant wail of a street performer’s violin, feel the press of humid air before a storm breaks. When you write with all five senses, your world stops being words on a page. It lives.
Your Challenge: Write a scene that engages all five senses—sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. Don’t just describe what’s happening. Make the reader experience it.
🔥 Need a spark? Try these:
A street market at sunset: What do you hear, smell, feel under your fingertips?
A song that reminds your character of someone they lost: Wow does it taste? (Yes, taste. Go wild.)
A sudden summer storm: How does the air change? What does rain on hot pavement smell like?
A first bite of something unforgettable: Describe it without ever saying what it is.
Set a timer for 15 minutes and let your words explode with life. Don’t hold back. Sure, it’ll feel silly and unnatural at first. Just go with it.
You never know… you may not only refresh your creativity but spark a new story idea!
